In India, in the towns and cities, in urban and rural areas, are vulnerable children basically living in harsh realities, often faced with a situation of fear, poverty, neglect, abuse, deprivation and labour. Many of them are deprived of the protection and care that all children deserve. They are sharp at street survival but ignorant in reading and writing. In many instances they are forced to do unlawful activities in order to survive. These are the young at risk in the country in need of help in education, skills and employment.
Don Bosco Institutions addresses this endemic problem with a market-based approach that is sensitive to the socio-economic needs of marginalized youth in the 18-35 years age group. There are 300+ skill training centres across India that attempts to bridge this widening divide between those who have access to opportunities and those who are increasingly being marginalized from the ‘new economy’ jobs.
Bosco Boys Home and Technical Training (BBH) was set up in 1976 to cater to orphans, runaways, street children, children of commercial sex workers, single guardian children and those in conflict with law situations. At present, over 60 such boys registered under CWC- Child Welfare Committee of the Government of India’s Juvenile Justice System for Children- are living under Bosco Boys Home’s care and protection.
In order to cater to the needs of the poor under privileged and unemployed youth, runaways from broken families, school dropouts having nowhere to go and faced with the stark reality of a life of poverty. The Society decided to set up a Technical Institute to empower them to reach for their dreams and thus take their place in society with their heads held high. Bosco Boys Home and Technical Training presently conducts six non-formal technical training courses, which are spread over a three-month, six month, and an year duration.
Presently the courses include: 4-wheeler mechanics, 2-wheeler mechanics, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning, Electrician, Hotel Management and Catering (including Bakery, Cookery, F&B and housekeeping) and GDA Nursing Assistant. The new courses to be initiated are: Beautician, Welder & Fitter.
As a part of our support to social activities in India, Seth Bhojraj Hassomal Charitable Trust has partnered with Bosco Boys Home, a part of the Don Bosco Group of Institutions for providing Vocational training programs in the areas of Wielder, Fitter, & Beautician courses. SBHCT has helped BBH in setting up these labs by providing the required equipment to facilitate effective implementation of quality training to students. This support will go a long way in enhancing the quality of training and boosting the employability of the youth of Mumbai and the nearby suburbs. This support will benefit around 250 students every year in getting quality training and mainstream employment.
