Salaam Baalak Trust: Empowering Street Children for a Brighter Future
Founded in 1989, Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT) was inspired by the resilient spirit of street children who participated in Mira Nair’s acclaimed film Salaam Bombay!. Since its inception, SBT has worked tirelessly to support street children, providing them with a comprehensive ‘net of services’ to help them achieve their developmental goals. The Trust creates a carefully managed environment that fosters the holistic development of these vulnerable children, ensuring they receive the support they need to build a better future.
SBT’s programs include advocacy, group and individual counseling, formal and non-formal education, school readiness programs, nutrition support, healthcare, medical assistance, day-care, and night shelters. These services are designed to address the immediate needs of street children and guide them toward a path of growth and opportunity.
As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting social welfare initiatives in India, the Seth Bhojraj Hassomal Charitable Trust has partnered with Salaam Baalak Trust to provide extracurricular training for street children. This partnership offers a range of activities including painting, performing arts (singing, theatre, dance), sports (chess, yoga, martial arts, football), and skill training (computers and photography). The initiative benefits 220 children across three shelter homes in Mumbai—Andheri, Kandivali, and Malad—helping them develop new skills, discover their talents, and gain confidence for a brighter, more empowered future.
