They have been able to spread their services all over the country through a network of twenty-three state and sixty-five district branches. The Integrated Education (I.E.) and Community Based Rehabilitation Program initiated with the help of local NGOs all over the country has benefited about 10,000 visually impaired children and 30,000 blind men and women in the last thirty years.

As a part of our support for social activities in India, the Seth Bhojraj Hassomal Charitable Trust has entered into an Association with National Association for the Blind for the following projects.

Case Study

01

Ketan Kuware, stays at Vasai along with his parents and younger sister.  Due to macular degeneration he became low vision.  He was in Municipal School till 7th Std.  When he was in school nobody realized his vision problem because of which he could not read and write properly and left the school.  His parents are handicapped, i.e. father is blind and physically handicapped, and mother is physically handicapped.  His sister is also low vision.

The family is fully dependant on others for financial support. He is a student of the NAB – Vile Parle centre supported by SBHCT to train dropped out VI – Visually Impaired students for the Xth Std exams.

Ketan is quite independent in his daily living skills. His mobility is also good as he travels alone from Vasai to the Vile Parle Centre. He helps his parents for their daily chores like cleaning house, washing dishes, clothes, getting things from outside, etc.

He likes to play music.  He can read N-18 print size which is bigger than normal font size, but still he finds it hard while reading the books.  He is appearing for SSC Board Exam this year, as a private candidate.

Prasad Utekar, born on January 07, 1991, was partially sighted formerly.  Due to retinitis pigmentosa his vision is deteriorating.  He stays along with his parents and three younger siblings.  His parents were not aware about the education of the blind. They kept Prasad at Home for all these years. Though he was from Mumbai he did not have formal education before he came to the NAB – Vile Parle Centre supported by SBHCT.

He is good and totally independent in his daily routine.  He manages his lunch if none is available at home. Initially he did basic rehabilitation course where he learnt about mobility.  By using white cane properly, he travels on his own.  Last year he used to come to Vile Parle Centre regularly.  As he has no formal education he was registered with National Open School.  He appeared for the exam last year and cleared in four subjects.  This year he will appear for two more subjects.

He is quite social, willing to help other students.  He is very adjustable/flexible, mix ups very well with others. Other than study, in last October he participated in the event for creating awareness where he travelled cycling from Delhi to Mumbai.   In January 2018 he participated in National Level Kabaddi (for blind), shot-put throw, javelin throw, 100 meters running, held in Delhi.

Currently along with NIOS studies, he is doing massage therapy course from the Rehabilitation Centre at Mahalaxmi.
