Bombay Leprosy Project (BLP) is an Internationally recognized non- Governmental Charitable Organization established in the year 1976 with the objective of working for the cause of leprosy and to improve the quality of life of persons affected with leprosy entirely through public donations. Since 1976 the organization has been working relentlessly in implementing the policies of National Leprosy Eradication Program and assisting the Government in its endeavor. The project approach has been community-based rather than hospital-based for diagnosis and treatment of leprosy undertaken with the objective of eliminating the age-old stigma associated with the disease and mainstreaming the persons affected with leprosy in the society.

Apart from diagnosis and treatment of patients, the Project has been carrying out operational and technical Research in the field of leprosy and has published over 300 scientific papers in Indian and International journals. The efforts of BLP have been highly recognized for its excellence in Leprosy research.

BLP as an NGO with its basic objective of operational research has also tried to practice several field oriented innovative concepts in Chemotherapy, Disability care, Rehabilitation and Medical Education. BLP has documented its observations periodically in National and International Publications of great repute.

As a part of our support to social activities in India, the Seth Bhojraj Hassomal Charitable Trust has partnered with Bombay Leprosy Project to support Comprehensive Leprosy Management through the Referral Centre in Mumbai for diagnosis and treatment of Leprosy patients. This partnership has benefited over 12000 patients including repeat patients with multiple follow up visits over the last 5 years. The Trust has continued this association for the year 2022-23 to further extend this benefit to the leprosy affected patients.

Case Study

01

A 24-year-old male residing in Colaba Mumbai, native of Uttar Pradesh diagnosed with Leprosy in November 2014 and was treated in one of the Municipal public health hospitals with anti- leprosy treatment for two years.

He was also treated for recurrent type 1 reaction with corticosteroids four times but was developing recurrence of reaction. It was then that he was referred to Bombay Leprosy Project (BLP) Referral centre supported by SBHCT in November 2017 for further advise and expertise.

At BLP he was thoroughly examined and investigated for skin smear and was reported to be 1+ve. While he was on the treatment he was already on low dose of steroid, he developed deformity of right eye lagophthalmos as he was unable to close right eye and also right facial paralysis.

He was then immediately started on high dose of steroids after necessary investigation coupled with aggressive physiotherapy services including muscle stimulation and provided with goggles to protect his eyes from damage.

Within six months of treatment supported with physiotherapy his nerve damage and deformity were reversed.
